Skin rejuvenation: Microneedling

We all want our skin to look its best, but of course, we also want to avoid surgery. One great option that is available that doesn’t involve surgery or ablation is called microneedling. This procedure can yield results that rival surgery and other skin rejuvenation methods by stimulating our bodies to do what they should naturally do but may have forgotten. This treatment is becoming increasingly popular simply because it works.

Basics Of The Procedure

At Success by Design we specifically use Rejuvapen for our Microneedling procedures. Rejuvapen is a micro-needling system that creates micro-perforations in the epidermis and the top layer of the dermis. As a result, your skin will shift its natural repair mechanism into high gear and cause it to start producing collagen and elastin to repair these micro-perforations. This is why it is also referred to as collagen induction therapy.

As a result of the treatment, you will see that your skin becomes firmer and regains its original elasticity. Fine lines and wrinkles will be visibly reduced, pores become finer, circulation is stimulated, and the overall condition of the skin improves greatly. Rejuvapen can also be used to enhance the absorption of bio-active ingredients such as growth factors that are applied to the skin during treatment, maximizing results.

How Do I Prepare For This Treatment?

This treatment is safe, minimally-invasive, and it is an outpatient procedure. That means that there is almost no downtime so you can get back to your regular life right away. With that being said, there are some things to know that will help you prepare and achieve the best results possible.

Here are some pro-tips you can prepare by following:

  • Stop Accutane treatment 6 months prior
  • Avoid retinoids and skin-drying products for approximately one week before
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medication for 3 days prior
  • Avoid laser treatments or sunburns for at least two weeks prior
  • Avoid waxing, depilatories, or electrolysis for at least 5 days prior
  • Do not shave on the day of treatment

If followed correctly, these steps will allow the least amount of irritation to the skin and help decrease the recovery time significantly.

What To Do After Treatment?

After a collagen induction therapy treatment, there are certain steps to take to help the skin heal faster. Some things to pay attention to post-treatment are:

  • Avoid sweating, strenuous exercise, and steam for at least 24 hours
  • After a minimum of 4 hours, wash the face with a gentle, non-abrasive cleaner and pat dry
  • Sleep on your back and elevate your head to lessen swelling
  • Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure for at least 2 weeks
  • Use sunscreen SPF 30 or higher to protect the skin

There may be swelling and slight bruising after the treatment, which will go away soon.
After the first few days, you will experience some flaking, so make sure to keep your skin extra moisturized with a quality serum, preferably one containing Hyaluronic acid.

Another treatment session can be scheduled in 4 to 6 weeks’ time, to allow full recovery of the skin.

Who Should Not Undergo This Treatment?

Though it’s useful to most, there are some people who are not eligible for this treatment. You may not have this treatment if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have a sunburn or inflamed skin
  • Have a cold sore or skin infection
  • Have keloid scars
  • Have allergies to the products used, like lidocaine
  • Have cystic acne

When it’s time for treatment, the provider needs to be informed of all medications you are taking, and any changes in your medical history. This will ensure your safety and encourage the best results possible.
